Junior Year Timetable

FALL

Academic performance: Your junior year represents two of the three remaining semesters of your academic record that colleges will use to assess your application for admission. Consequently, you need to do your best work ever in the courses you take. Planning your course of study, you should enroll in courses that are challenging for you, but also compliment your interests and academic strengths. Take as many honors level or advanced-placement courses that are available, and for which you are eligible. Selective colleges and universities are attracted to students that are challenged with demanding college preparatory courses.

Meet with admission counselors who may visit your community and your high school guidance office during the fall - September through early November. The fall is the time when counselors are out of the office recruiting prospective students. College Fair programs are also good forums for gathering information.

Testing: Prepare and register to take the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT). (See Strategies for College Testing). Registration and information booklets about the PSAT testing program are available in your high school guidance office.

DECEMBER

Receive your score reports from the PSAT from your counselor in the guidance office. Review the report thoroughly and seek guidance as to how you might improve. Analysis of your score report can be excellent preparation for your SAT I testing in the spring.

JANUARY and FEBRUARY

Financial Aid: This is a good time to begin researching the options you may have for financial aid. (See Financial Aid).

Begin the research process. Seek counsel as to which colleges or universities match your goals and objectives and which you would like to explore. Think of opportunities to visit campuses. Contact colleges and universities for admission materials and information.

MARCH

Standardized Testing: (Again, review recommendations under Strategies for College Testing regarding the SAT I, SAT II (Subject Tests), and the ACT). Register and prepare to take the tests on scheduled dates in the spring. (See College Testing Schedule).

MAY

Gather more information about colleges on your list. Some admission personnel travel in the spring, and there are College Fair programs in the spring. Begin paring down your research list.

Look into constructive summer experiences. Enrolling in an academic course(s) at a local college or university, pursuing a summer enrichment program, or working as a volunteer are a few examples. Demonstrable experiences such as these will bode well for you in the college selection process.

SUMMER

Visit some institutions on your list. During the summer when admission officers are in the office and traveling less, campus visits can be productive. Plan itineraries, take campus tours, and have interviews
