Senior Year TimetableFALLArrange conferences with the aim of narrowing your research list of college choices to approximately ten. Make certain that everyone involved, including your parents, is in general agreement about what goals, focuses and factors will determine your final application list.Research information on the institutions in which you have the greatest interest. Write for information and applications, if they are not available in your school's guidance office. Become knowledgeable about such options as, Early Decision, Early Action and Notification (binding and non-binding), and Rolling Admissions procedures. Be aware of specific or suggested application deadlines for colleges that offer these programs - i.e. some deadlines occur early in the fall. Talk with admissions counselors who come to your area. A large number of counselors visit during the fall term and good information can be obtained from them. They particularly want to talk with high school seniors. Testing: Review your testing strategy and profile. (See Strategies For College Testing). Remember you should take both the SAT I and ACT at least once. Many colleges and universities give students the option of reporting scores from either testing program. Optimum dates to target for the fall are: late October for the ACT and early October or November for the SAT I. Note: SAT II (Subject Tests) may be required or suggested by certain institutions; however, you should delay taking those SAT II tests until December or January test dates. Check your testing schedule carefully. Between Thanksgiving and your winter break, determine your final list. Make a list of application deadlines and begin working on your application essays. Consider an optimum number of six applications. Consider visits to college or university campuses during the winter. DECEMBER and JANUARYAttend to deadlines for your applications. Be certain that appropriate forms are given to your registrar, counselor, and teachers writing your recommendations if they are required. Before the end of the first semester review your list of applications and make certain that all materials have been sent. Financial Aid deadlines: The FAFSA and the financial aid PROFILE of the CSS deadlines will range from January 1st to February 15th. However, check the recommendations or requirements for your specific applications. Basically, the sooner you file the required forms, the greater will be the availability of aid. Testing reminder: Consider using December and January testing dates for all tests. Retakes may be appropriate, and those dates are not too late. APRIL and MAYConsider your choices and select your college or university. Keep track of the deadlines for informing the institutions you have applied to of your final decision (usually May 1st). Please be sure to write a note graciously declining acceptance to those you do not wish to attend.Continue second semester work and finish your high school career with pride and style.
