When the Arithmetic is Simple
When the arithmetic is simple and you understand what the question is asking, then it's OK to
* substitute each answer choice into the problem, and
* eliminate the choices until only one fits or guess between the remaining two or three.
In more complicated problems, this can take more time than finding a solution through mathematical reasoning.
